Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Tkjj@tysonkilbeyjiujitsu.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Absolutely not! While physical fitness is a major staple in the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle, it is not a

requirement to begin. In fact, it will be likely be the result of your training. Speaking of

training, we have classes structured for every level of experience from complete beginner

to experienced practitioner.

We train in both gi and no gi at the academy. We usually train in one-to-two-month cycles where we alternate. However, if it is gi month and you forget your gi you can modify your technique to accommodate.

Yes, but it is not required. At Tyson Kilbey Jiu Jitsu we know that our students have a variety of goals unique to themselves. Some like to compete in Jiu Jitsu or MMA, some are looking for self-defense, and others are looking for a fun hobby to exercise and to make new friends in the process. All of these goals are worthwhile and achievable, and we have a supportive and vibrant community to help you reach your goals.

Tyson is a black belt under the world-renowned UFC Pioneer Royce Gracie. Tyson has also spent several hundred hours training with other members of the famous Gracie Family and other top-level practitioners. Master Royce Gracie frequently visits the academy for seminars and promotion ceremonies.

There is a separate belt system for children and adults. For Kids Jiu Jitsu, the belt system goes from white to gray to yellow to orange to green. In addition, each belt can accumulate a total of four stripes. For adults, the belt system goes from white to blue to purple to brown to black. Just like in the kid’s system, each belt before black can accumulate a total of four stripes. Jiu Jitsu promotions take a large amount of dedication and practice. Each stripe is considered an important accomplishment.

In addition to our world class Jiu Jitsu curriculum, we have a foundations of striking class that is top of the line in both quality and safety. For a truly well-rounded mixed martial arts experience adding this course to training curriculum will pay tremendous dividends.

The academy is cleaned frequently, and safety and hygiene are consistently taught in all classes. This includes how to be a safe training partner and the explanation of showering before and after class and not wearing shoes on the mat.

Come in anytime to try out your free trial class! We are confident you are going to love it and then we have several sign-up options to fit your schedule and goals. See you on the mats!
