Kids Jiu-Jitsu

Parental Preparation

Is a half hour enough time?

YES. Consistency and being on the mat over time is the key. Training a little, a lot is the secret to success.

Should I coach or help give directions?

NO! Obviously, you are the parent, so you have the ultimate say, but I highly recommend you allow them to be kids and enjoy the experience. I have several strategies that I have honed over the years to get them where they need to be. No one is perfect and focused ALL the TIME. They are kids. The secret is for them to keep showing up and enjoy the training experience.

Should I ask to speak to the instructor if I have any concerns or questions?

YES! Always!

Will this class prepare my child for Jiu Jitsu tournaments?

KIND OF. To be completely transparent, my focus is self-defense and character development. The techniques learned could easily be used in competition, but if your intention is for your child to be highly competitive, I would supplement this class with private lessons with that goal in mind.

Is there a belt system?

YES—Kids Jiu Jitsu does have belt system that generally goes from white to gray to yellow to orange to green. Green is the highest Jiu Jitsu belt that can be awarded to anyone under the age of 16. This does not mean that children cannot join and learn from the adult class. By the age of 12 or 13, many children are ready for the adult coed class!

Jiu Jitsu includes chokes. Will my child learn those?

Only after careful discussion and demonstration of an understanding of Jiu Jitsu practices. If

you do not want them to learn chokes for any reason let me know.

What do I need to know about Hygiene and Safe Practices?

It is extremely important to shower or take a bath after being on the mat to avoid “ring worm” and general sicknesses. Also—if your kiddo is sick, please let them take a rest day.

  • If physically fighting, remember the goal is to calm the situation down and maintain control.
